River Angling for Salmon and Trout was originally published in Kelso in 1840, followed by this revised edition of 1864, which includes a memoir of the author. "Younger (1840), one of the best fisherman that ever lived"(J.W. Hills, 1921) John Younger (1785-1861) was an exceptional character: from an impoverished background, self-taught, village shoemaker, but lived as a poet, fly-dresser of renown, master angler and author of one of the most innovative and practical books in the history of angling. " .A man of original ideas and marked capacity." (Westwood and Satchell: Bibliotheca Piscatoria, 1883). "He was born in 1785, and, over a hundred years ago, suggested that when trout were feeding below the surface the angler should tie down the wings of his flies to near the tail, to give them an appearance "something like the maggot released from its first case on the bottom stone and on its ascent to the surface" and "as much as you can, let them sink low in the water", an early foreshadowing of the present-day tying and fishing of nymphs " Arthur Ransome, 1955. John Younger was a remarkable man, and clearly a first rate fisher and fly-tyer. His salmon patterns pre-date those of Scrope (1843) and represent the classic old drab Tweed flies which were swept aside by the flashy Irish gaudies. Written with absolute clarity and total conviction the book includes much sound and important advice on every aspect of fishing for salmon and trout.
Reprinted from the revised edition of 1860, which includes a memoir of the author. Younger was a shoe-maker from St Boswells on Tweed. His salmon patterns pre-date those of Scrope (1843), and represent the classic old Tweed flies.
